A Unified PTAS for Prize Collecting TSP and Steiner Tree Problem in Doubling Metrics

چکیده
We present a unified polynomial-time approximation scheme (PTAS) for the prize collecting traveling salesman problem (PCTSP) and the prize collecting Steiner tree problem (PCSTP) in doubling metrics. Given a metric space and a penalty function on a subset of points known as terminals, a solution is a subgraph on points in the metric space, whose cost is the weight of its edges plus the penalty due to terminals not covered by the subgraph. Under our unified framework, the solution subgraph needs to be Eulerian for PCTSP, while it needs to be connected for PCSTP. Before our work, even a QPTAS for the problems in doubling metrics is not known. Our unified PTAS is based on the previous dynamic programming frameworks proposed in [Talwar STOC 2004] and [Bartal, Gottlieb, Krauthgamer STOC 2012]. However, since it is unknown which part of the optimal cost is due to edge lengths and which part is due to penalties of uncovered terminals, we need to develop new techniques to apply previous divide-and-conquer strategies and sparse instance decompositions. ∗Department of Computer Science, The University of Hong Kong. {hubert, sfjiang}@cs.hku.hk †Department of Physics, Tsinghua University. Prize-Collecting Steiner Tree and Forest in Planar Graphs
We obtain polynomial-time approximation-preserving reductions (up to a factor of 1+ε) from the prizecollecting Steiner tree and prize-collecting Steiner forest problems in planar graphs to the corresponding problems in graphs of bounded treewidth. We also give an exact algorithm for the prize-collecting Steiner tree problem that runs in polynomial time for graphs of bounded treewidth. This, com...
متن کاملTitle A QPTAS for TSP with Fat Weakly Disjoint Neighborhoods in Doubling Metrics
We consider the Traveling Salesman Problem with Neighborhoods (TSPN) in doubling metrics. The goal is to find a shortest tour that visits each of a collection of n subsets (regions or neighborhoods) in the underlying metric space. We give a quasi-polynomial time approximation scheme (QPTAS) when the regions are what we call α-fat weakly disjoint. This notion combines the existing notions of dia...
متن کاملPrize-collecting Network Design on Planar Graphs
In this paper, we reduce Prize-Collecting Steiner TSP (PCTSP), Prize-Collecting Stroll (PCS), Prize-Collecting Steiner Tree (PCST), Prize-Collecting Steiner Forest (PCSF) and more generally Submodular Prize-Collecting Steiner Forest (SPCSF) on planar graphs (and more generally bounded-genus graphs) to the same problems on graphs of bounded treewidth. More precisely, we show any α-approximation ...
متن کاملOn Euclidean Prize-collecting Steiner Forest Problems
In this paper, we consider prize-collecting Steiner forest and k-Steiner forest when the vertices of the input graph are points in the Euclidean plane and the lengths are Euclidean distances. First, we simplify the analysis of the polynomial-time approximation scheme (PTAS) of Borradaile et al. [7, 8] for the Euclidean Steiner forest problem. This is done by proving a new structural property an...
متن کاملA 4-Approximation Algorithm for k-Prize Collecting Steiner Tree Problems
This paper studies a 4-approximation algorithm for k-prize collecting Steiner tree problems. This problem generalizes both k-minimum spanning tree problems and prize collecting Steiner tree problems. Our proposed algorithm employs two 2-approximation algorithms for k-minimum spanning tree problems and prize collecting Steiner tree problems. Also our algorithm framework can be applied to a speci...
